NYU Medical Center
GOALS
Restore the existing basement level kitchen to full operation following super storm Sandy as quickly as possible.
CHALLENGE
The kitchen would be replaced “in kind” following a complete renovation, including replacement of all finishes. A flashlight – led survey, inventory and evaluation of equipment for potential reuse was key to the successful planning process. Replacement of flood damaged infrastructure put pressure on the construction schedule.
SOLUTION
The project was “fast – tracked” for completion but an extensive renovation including replacement of architectural finishes and damaged infrastructural elements would take time. Proper planning was required to avoid rework: “do it right, do it once”, stay on schedule.
RESULTS
Superstorm Sandy struck on October 22nd. Construction documents were issued for bid four months later on February 28th. Construction took seven months and the kitchen re-opened in September. The project reset the clock on the facility life cycle.
